Role Title: Food Bank Volunteer
Responsible to: Food Community Team Lead/Volunteer Coordinator
Responsible for: Assisting in the operation of the Food Bank
Hours required: 3 or more hours per week (Mon to Fri)
Location: St George’s, Water St, Wigan, WN1 1DN
Main purpose of role
The Food Bank provides emergency food parcels to individuals and families who have been referred by partner agencies. The Food Bank Volunteer Role is key to the success of the efficient running of the Food Bank.
Key Tasks
- Making up food parcels as per referral requests to best meet the needs of the individual or family.
- Hand over food parcels to individuals referred or partner agencies who may attend on their behalf to collect.
- Provide basic signposting advice where required to ensure that those who need further support know where to access services.
- Accepting donations and deliveries
- Checking dates and quality of stock donated
- Sorting items and restocking the shelves
- Ensuring that the food bank is clean and tidy and to actively participate in other duties such as monitoring and recording fridge temperatures
- Attend food bank team meetings as required
- Participate in supervision meetings as required
- Maintain confidentiality of individuals using the service
- Participate in initial and ongoing training
- Be responsible, as required, for health and safety issues, including safeguarding.
- Monitor own wellbeing and capacity and draw on Brick Project support as appropriate
- Be a positive representative of The Brick and the Queens Hall Action on Poverty

Commitment:
The nature of the Food Bank Assistant is to develop a professional relationship with individuals, staff and other volunteers and offer practical help and support to the food bank team. It would be expected after training that the volunteer would commit to a regular session or sessions per week.
Training and Support:
Induction training will be provided as well as ongoing training and support.
Supervision:
Supervisions are not scheduled but we encourage you to request one with your team lead or volunteer coordinator at any point you feel this would be beneficial or as and when a concern arises.
Expenses:
QHAP will repay the cost of travel to and from The Brick for volunteering sessions.
