Volunteer

We wouldn’t be able to deliver our work to rebuild lives across the borough if it wasn’t for the vital support of our volunteers.

Meet Brick Volunteer Teigan

When did you start volunteering at The Brick?
I started volunteering at The Brick in September 2022, spending an hour on my dinner break helping, then I would come again after college hours to help. Now I try to do a full day on my college day off.

Why did you decide to volunteer at The Brick?
I started a Health and Social Care course at college and knew I wanted to work within the sector, and I wanted to give back to my community and help people.

What does your volunteering role involve?
Within The Brick, I try to help out wherever I’m needed. I first started helping by putting the donations we received on the shelves but then I took an interest in helping behind the till with the lovely Sue and Emma. I also give advice and support if people need help filling in membership forms and getting in touch with Wigan Council welfare desk.

What do you most enjoy about volunteering?
I enjoy seeing all the people we help and how grateful they are for the smallest amounts of things. Although people who use The Brick sometimes feel embarrassed, I feel proud that people are able to ask for help when they need it and that we are there to help and give advice.

What would you say to anyone who was thinking of joining the volunteering team?
For anyone wanting to volunteer, I would say if you wanted to help struggling individuals and families and give back to the community, being at The Brick gives you those opportunities. Even giving an hour of your time could help lots of families and individuals in our borough.

Meet Brick Volunteer Roy

When did you start volunteering at The Brick?
I have been volunteering since September 2022.

Why did you decide to volunteer at The Brick?
I decided to volunteer as I had spare time after my wife passed away. I had been her carer full time for 5 years and felt like working in the community would be beneficial to both me and the organisation. I volunteer at Gidlow lane shop two and a half days per week and one-half day at St Georges.

What does your volunteering role involve?
My role involves general duties in the shop. Getting donors to join our Gift Aid scheme. Serving customers, helping to move stock around, price labelling and just trying to be helpful to customers. At St Georges, I help stock shelves and take rubbish to the bins.

What do you most enjoy about volunteering?
Volunteering has had a very positive impact. It makes me feel useful, I enjoy social interaction with colleagues, customers and donors.

What would you say to anyone who was thinking of joining the volunteering team?
Volunteering makes me feel very proud knowing I am doing my bit for a very worthwhile charity.

Meet Brick Volunteer Jane

When did you start volunteering at The Brick?
3 years ago during lockdown. I had finished full time work and wanted to do something rewarding with my time.

Why did you decide to volunteer at The Brick?
I looked at other charities, but I felt The Brick was where I could really help somebody and make the most difference.

What does your volunteering role involve?
I help generally at the Food Community and just get stuck in with whatever needs doing. Unpacking deliveries, restocking the shelves and helping customers.

What do you most enjoy about volunteering?
I most enjoy knowing that I’m making a difference to someone’s life.

What would you say to anyone who was thinking of joining the volunteering team?
Come and spend a day with us and find out what its all about. You’ll definitely sign up!
